Every day after school my mom would do two things. The first was to chat with us. Mom would ask me and my siblings about our day. What class was our favorite, did we pass a test, were we kind to someone…Mom genuinely wanted to know all about how we felt about the day. Most of the time all five of us talked at once. I have no clue how she understood anything with five high-pitched voices clamoring for attention, but she did.
The second thing my mom did was to give us a snack.

It didn’t matter what the snack was. Sometimes it was homemade cookies and other times it was cheese and crackers. Sitting down at the table, munching on celery and peanut butter while telling Mom all about my day is one of my favorite memories.
Take a moment today and make a snack (like Ants on a Log below), and ask your child how their day was. Neither of you will forget the time spent around the table with a snack and a chat.
What you’ll need: Nut Butter (such as Peanut or Almond Butter), raisins, celery.
Instructions:
- Clean and chop the celery stalk, removing the leaves and the bottom, into 2 or 3 pieces.
- Spread peanut butter onto celery.
- Top with raisins
- Enjoy!
